How to Lift the Shadow Curse (and Survive BG3's Worst Headaches)

The Shadow Curse is the main environmental threat in Act 2 of Baldur’s Gate 3. It turns huge portions of the map into a dark, HP-draining nightmare. Lifting it isn’t strictly required to finish the game, but it makes Act 2 much easier, opens up safer travel through the Shadow-Cursed Lands, and unlocks Halsin as a proper companion.

The full quest chain takes you from Last Light Inn to Moonrise Towers, through a shadowy portal, and finally to a haunted house in the deep shadows. If you want the curse gone, here’s the exact path.

Before You Start

You need a few things in place before this quest can even begin.

Prerequisites

  • Reach Act 2 and make it to Last Light Inn.
  • Keep Halsin alive. If he died during the Emerald Grove conflict in Act 1, there is no Halsin at Last Light to perform the ritual, and the quest can’t progress.
  • Do not let Isobel get kidnapped or killed before you wake Art Cullagh. If Last Light Inn falls, Art Cullagh can die, and you’ll permanently lose access to this quest.
  • Bring light sources and radiant damage. Torches, the Light cantrip, a Moonlantern, Spirit Guardians, Moonbeam, and Turn Undead are all useful.

The quest is a multi-step sequence, so it’s not a single fight. Save before major encounters, especially the portal defense and anything involving Oliver.

Step 1: Wake Art Cullagh

The whole quest starts with a sleeping Harper named Art Cullagh. He’s lying in a bed in Last Light Inn, and he keeps muttering the name “Thaniel.” Halsin believes Art knows something important, but he won’t wake up on his own.

You need a special item to wake him: the Lute of the Merciful.

Find the Lute of the Merciful

Head to Moonrise Towers. You can do this before making the tower hostile, which is easier. The lute is in the Warden’s Quarters on the upper floor, near Ketheric Thorm’s private rooms. The door may be locked, so pick it or find another way inside.

Inside, look for the lute on a table. It’s not marked as a major quest item until you grab it, so take careful inventory. Once you have it, leave Moonrise Towers and head back to Last Light Inn.

If you’ve already made Moonrise Towers hostile, you’ll need to fight your way up to the room. It’s still accessible, but expect more resistance.

Play the Lute for Art Cullagh

Stand next to Art Cullagh, open your inventory, select the Lute of the Merciful, and choose to use it. Your character will play the lute, Art Cullagh wakes up, and the quest really kicks into gear.

Art explains that he heard a boy in the Shadowfell, near a lake. Halsin recognizes the boy’s name: Thaniel. The next step is to find the portal Halsin mentions and enter the Shadowfell.

Step 2: Defend Halsin at the Lakeshore Portal

Follow the quest marker to the lakeshore southwest of Last Light Inn. There’s a portal there, half-buried in the shadow. When you approach, Halsin will start a ritual to open the portal fully.

This triggers a serious fight.

Halsin is busy channeling the ritual, so he can’t defend himself. You need to keep enemies away from him and survive several waves of shadow creatures. The shadow ambush hits hard, especially if your party is underleveled or you forgot light sources.

Surviving the Portal Ambush

  • Save before starting the ritual. The fight can go sideways fast if you’re not ready.
  • Keep a torch or Light spell on your melee characters. Darkness makes the shadow enemies much harder to hit.
  • Use radiant damage whenever possible. Spirit Guardians, Moonbeam, and Turn Undead can wipe out groups of shadows and protect the portal area.
  • Keep healing ready. Halsin can take damage, and if he drops, the ritual fails.
  • Don’t chase enemies too far away. Stay near Halsin so you can intercept anything that heads toward him.

Once you survive the waves, Halsin finishes the ritual and enters the portal. Follow him through.

Step 3: Find Thaniel in the Shadowfell

Inside the Shadowfell, you’ll find Thaniel, a young boy tied to the spirit of the land. He isn’t an enemy. Talk to him and take the dialogue options that reassure him you’re there to help.

Thaniel explains that he’s split in two. His other half is still trapped in the Shadow-Cursed Lands, and that half is connected to a child named Oliver. To lift the curse, you need to bring both halves back together.

Thaniel comes with you, but the job isn’t over yet.

Step 4: Reunite Thaniel with Oliver

The quest marker now points to the House in the Deep Shadows. This area is in the worst part of the Shadow-Cursed Lands, so make sure you still have a light source and some healing available.

When you enter the house, you’ll meet Oliver. He’s Thaniel’s missing half, but the Shadow Curse has twisted him into something hostile. How you handle Oliver changes what happens next.

Try the Peaceful Route First

Talk to Oliver. If you choose the right dialogue options, especially the kind and patient ones, you can convince him to leave the curse behind. This may require a persuasion or intimidation check, so bring a character with high Charisma if you can.

If you successfully talk him down, Oliver and Thaniel reunite without a fight. That’s the cleanest way to end the quest.

If Oliver Attacks

If your dialogue checks fail or you choose to provoke him, the fight starts. Oliver summons shadow creatures and corrupt spirits to defend him. This fight is chaotic, and the cramped house doesn’t give you much room to spread out.

Focus on the shadow enemies first. Use radiant area-of-effect spells and Turn Undead to thin the crowd. Keep your party grouped near the exit so you don’t get surrounded.

After the fight, the curse’s hold on Oliver breaks, and he merges with Thaniel. The two halves are finally whole.

What Changes After the Curse Is Lifted

Once Thaniel and Oliver are reunited, the Shadow Curse lifts across the region.

  • The sky clears in the Shadow-Cursed Lands.
  • You no longer need torches, Moonlanterns, or Light spells to walk around safely in those areas.
  • Last Light Inn gets real sunlight again.
  • Halsin becomes a permanent companion who can join your party from camp.

It’s one of the most satisfying quest resolutions in Act 2, and it makes the final approach to Moonrise Towers much less stressful.

FAQ

Can I lift the Shadow Curse if Halsin is dead?

No. Halsin is required to open the portal to the Shadowfell and to reunite Thaniel and Oliver. If you missed him in Act 1 or let him die, the quest can’t be completed in that playthrough.

Does freeing the Nightsong lift the Shadow Curse automatically?

No. The Nightsong quest and the Shadow Curse quest are separate chains. Freeing the Nightsong helps with the final fight against Ketheric, but it won’t lift the curse on its own. You still need to do the Art Cullagh, Thaniel, and Oliver steps.

Can I come back and do this after the final Moonrise fight?

No. Once you reach the point of no return in Act 2 and the final confrontation with Ketheric begins, you’ll move out of the region. Finish the Shadow Curse quest before you start that sequence.

What happens if I kill Oliver?

The goal is to reunite Oliver with Thaniel, so try not to destroy him outright if you can avoid it. If combat starts, focus on the shadow creatures he summons and use radiant damage to break the curse’s hold. As long as the two halves are reunited, the curse lifts.
